Description

2011 | 2012 | 2013 | 2014

Last year, in lieu of making specific goals for my art, I said I would focus on just producing and letting the improvement come naturally instead of focusing on concrete expectations. Overall, I think it was a success. I may not have achieved as much general improvement in 2015 as I did in previous years, but I still developed a lot.

I bought a Cintiq, which has done wonders for my productivity. A tool is only as good as the artist that uses it, but, undoubtedly, the Cintiq improved my approach to drawing digitally. It provided a more "natural" process for drawing, which I believe has helped me develop faster. The bulk of my progression, I think, can be seen most obviously in the second half of the year after I got my Cintiq in May.

My anatomy work continues to get better and better, as does my coloring. While I sometimes still flounder with how to approach digital painting, I have finally found a "tried and true" method that I can automatically resort to. It's not flawless, of course, and I'm still working at it, but I can confidently say that I can (and explain how to) digitally paint.

I started experimenting with stylization, which has been a fun and useful exercise, as well as a fresh approach to interpreting characters. It has been an appropriate warm up for the comic work I plan to venture into (seriously) this coming year. I wish I would have pushed myself to do more types of work outside of illustrations, and more subject matter outside of World of Warcraft and other games. However, I was consumed by commissions for the majority of the year, thus it was hard to find opportunities and time to venture outside of that. Which was not a loss at all. I still took what opportunities I could to push my skills, especially in regard to full renderings and stylization.

In 2016, I have only two specific goals: do more personal, original work and to create and finish a comic. I have said this before, but I am going to take a purposeful step away from "fan work." While doing any sort of artwork regardless of subject matter can help development, I have stagnated in regard to my creative conceptual thinking. I have had a mind full of original concepts for ages now, yet have not allowed myself to explore them because of my focus on Warcraft. It doesn't have to be an all or nothing choice, but I've given over 5 years to the world of Warcraft. It's time to indulge myself in my own world for a while.

So, here's to 2016 and all of the creative endeavors yet to come.
